My adventure through Engineering Physics at the University of Arizona.

What’s Physics? I’ll Tell You What It Is.

Physics is shit, and physicists are people who eat that shit.

Equations…

Here are some equations I am in the process of memorizing for tomorrow’s first Exam :(

v_(x)=v_(0x)+a_(x)t

x=x_(0)+v_(0x)t+.5a_(x)t^2

(v_(x))^(2)=(v_0x)^(2)+2a_(x)(x-x_(0)

x-x_(0)=((v_(0x)+v_(x))/2)t

Here are what they look like when they’re made pretty!…sorta

Number 1

Number 2

Number three couldn’t be made… I guess it’s to CRAZY!

Number 4

Some Updates

Wow sorry that took so long for me to update, I’ve been bogged down with about 5 to 7 hours of math homework a night, and my physics lab has started so I’ve had lab reports to write.  Anyway, physics has been a lot of review from what we have learned in the first week, but we have finally begun to move ahead from linear motion into circular motion. I’ve had a little bit of trouble with the math that is done in physics because my Calc class doesn’t move as fast as my physics class. The U of A is really nice though because the Physics Department offers free tutoring in math and physics (which I will definitely hit up once I have time).

Just to give you an idea of what my calc class is like… we had our first test on Wednesday and the class average was about a 70 or so.  I got a 73% and 7 people got lower than a 50% and I believe a lot of them transfered out into an easier class.  I heard from somewhere that Calc 124 (my class) is the most failed class in the university…. awesome…

Engineering Madness

I’m not to sure what my engineering professor means by the formulas he puts on the board… I’ve never seen anything like them before and I think he assumes we all have.  I’m sure a lot of the class has, but I haven’t!  So confused…

Math 124

From Monday till Friday I was in the Math class 124-001 at 8 o’clock in the morning. My teacher was Mrs. Blackburn, a 3rd year grad student, and I did not like her method of teaching… at all.

Yesterday I finally got sick of it, and decided to change my class to one that was still 124 (calculus with applications), but to a different section which means I would have a different teacher who is not a grad student. YAY!

Also, I’ve been having troubles understanding some of the mathematic concepts of my Physics class so I have to have a meeting with my advisor and get something figured out. I’m disappointed because I really wanted to just understand it and do well… Oh well, I think it’ll be okay!

Well I’ll probably update again on either Tuesday or Wednesday depending on how much homework I have.

Peace

Physics 151

My Physics 151 class is in a lecture hall, which I have always heard is a terrible experience, with about 150 to 200 students.  The professor, Dr. Jackson, is awesome.  He is really laid back and I can really tell that he is a very, very smart man.

One thing I enjoy about the course is that the homework assignments don’t have “arbitrary due dates”, instead they have recommended times when they should be done.  Like I said, very laid back.

My Engineering 102 class is somewhat the same.  The professors are cool, laid back and extremely intelligent.  The class size is just above 250 students, but again, not a bad lecture hall experience.  All in all not a bad first day of classes!

Change of Major

Today I put in a request to change my major from Physics to Engineering Physics.  Hopefully they’ll accept my request.  If not, I guess I’ll just stick to Physics :(.  Classes start on Monday the 25th, and starting then I’ll have some updates with actual content…

What’s This?

Hello,

I’m Justin Powell, and I am going to be attending the University of Arizona as a freshman this coming Fall of 2008.  I’m just a regular guy with regular interests, who just happens to feel like writing about what he’s learning at this great university.  What exactly am I going to be studying? Engineering Physics that’s what!

Now I know that may sound lame, but to me it is quite interesting, and I’ll do my best to write in a captivating, interesting way that may just make you somewhat curious on exactly what Engineering Physics is.  Even if you don’t find it quite so interesting, maybe you’ll enjoy reading about some kid who wants to die because can’t understand a single thing the professor is saying. We all like to read about someone else’s tragedies right? Makes our lives seem all the better.

Well I plan on beginning this tumblelog when school starts at the U of A, August 25th, so stay tuned and I hope you enjoy. :)
